“Motocross”. Instead, I had won four round trip tickets to Sydney, Australia for the 2000 Summer Olympics. I know I should’ve been excited, but I was still caught up on the dirt bike.
A few weeks later, we were picked up in a limo and chauffered to the Toronto airport where we departed for Sydney. We got tickets to the Opening Ceremonies as well as track and field, where Miriam Jones and Maurice Green won gold medals, tennis, seeing Venus and Serena Williams play, women’s gymnastics, and women’s soccer. As you can imagine, I was most excited about women’s soccer. The whole environment surrounding the Olympics was amazing. There was so much energy and excitement and people from all over the world were there to support their countries and celebrate the many great athletes.
I wore my Mia Hamm t-shirt to the game. We saw the gold medal game and I couldn’t believe my eyes as Briana Scurry was warming up in goal and some of the greatest female soccer players in history were running around in front of me, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, and Kristine Lilly to name a few. Unfortunately, the U.S. lost to Norway, receiving the silver medal. As the players were coming off the field, they each took off a cleat and threw them to the fans. My sister and I each caught one. Needless to say, this trip was an unbelievable experience that I will never forget. To be able to watch soccer greats in the Olympics really inspired me and fostered an even more intense passion for the game.
